CAS ETH in Risk and Security

On behalf of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology ETH Zürich, Global Risk Forum GRF Davos conducted the postgraduate course CAS ETH in Risk and Security Modul V7: Natural hazards in Davos. During 4 days, Students from all over Switzerland, and some also from Germany and Austria, concerned theirselves with risk and threats caused by nature.

For the purpose of an integral riskmanagement the course gave a holistic overview of for Switzerland, standing for all the Alpine countries, relevant natural hazards. Numerous experts discussed with the students the possible protective or preventive measures. Particular attention was directed to the question: -What is feasible? What is affordable? Are there marginal cost of saving one life?

A different perspective on the issue, opened the roundtable with surprise guest NLA coach Arno Del Curto, who encouraged the students to see risks as opportunities.

Within this course GRF Davos also invited to a public lecture on Wednesday 21 October. Dr. Mischa Croci-Maspoli made a presentation on "Climate Change in Switzerland - Where are we today, what will the future bring?” The subject was of keen interest, not only among the students but also in the public. Due to various factors clear predictions for the future can not be made. What is clear is that global warming will continue, and that it is certainly man made.

As a first course of its kind GRF Davos received a majority of positive feedback, from both students and ETH. Within the Risk Academy other courses are scheduled.
