UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development

After the first five years of the UN Decacade of Education for Sustainable developement (ESD), the UNESCO World Conference on ESD was held in Bonn, Germany, from 31 March to 2 April 2009.

The World Conference comprised a high-level segment, plenary and workshop sessions, project-based workshops, special events and an exhibition of good practices. Each element contributed to the four conference objectives:

1. To highlight the essential contribution of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) to all of education and to achieving quality education
2. To promote international exchange on ESD
3. To carry out a stock-taking of DESD implementation
4. To develop strategies for the way ahead

Outcomes of the different sessions and workshops were directly reported by rapporteuers and served as input into the Bonn Declaration, which was adopted on 2 April 2009 by the participants of the conference, coming from over 150 countries.

The Global Risk Forum and the Harbin Alliance were represented in the conference by Dr. Myriam Poll, who served as an Emissary of the Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Workshop to the Climate Change Workshop, in order to raise awareness of the close linkages between the topics.
